چکیده

Purpose: Low crystallinity celluloses (LCC) are materials that have a substantially reduced degree of crystallinity, typically ranging between 15 and 45%. It is useful as an excipient in preparation of tablets and confectionery products. The aim of this work was to obtain from αcellulose content of corn cob, a low crystallinity cellulose (LCC-CC), and study its physical properties as well as evaluation of its potential as tablet excipient. Methods: αcellulose (AC-CC) obtained from corn cob by a delignification process, was depolymerized with 85% phosphoric acid to yield LCC-CC product, whose physical properties were compared with those of AC-CC. Results: The yield of AC-CC and LCC-CC were 14 and 11 %, respectively. The physical properties indicated a good level of purity of the cellulose materials as they conform to British Pharmacopoeia specifications. The flow indices, however, showed that these materials flowed poorly. Conclusion: It was concluded that LCC-CC is a potential disintegrant and filler-diluent, in pharmaceutical tableting.

Dissolving Pulp (alpha-cellulose) from Corn Stalk by Kraft Process

Corn stalk can be used as an alternative non-wood raw material to produce cellulosic dissolving grade pulp. In this work, the potential of corn stalk in the production of dissolving pulp (alpha-cellulose) was investigated. It was collect ed from a corn stalk farm of Kermanshah, Iran. The sequences of experimental work were: water and acid prehydrolysis at 160˚C for 30min, followed by Kraft pulp...

Dissolution and Regeneration of the Produced Nano Bacterial Cellulose of Food Industries Wastewaters by a Cost-Benefit Method

This paper applied a simple and cost-benefit method for the production of regenerated bacterial cellulose. The inexpensive production of cellulose with complex media derived from wastewater from food industries such as molasses adds a lot of contaminants to the produced bacterial cellulose, which puts a lot of challenges in cellulose purification. Therefore, the present study aimed...

Characteristics and Properties of Cellulose Nanofibers Prepared by TEMPO Oxidation of Corn Husk

This paper describes preparation of 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO) mediated oxidized cellulose nanofibers (TOCNs) from corn husk. The process adopted for this work included alkaline treatment, TEMPO/NaBr/NaClO-mediated oxidation, and homogenization. The morphological investigation of TOCNs was performed using atomic force microscopy (AFM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM)...
